Why Following Your Curiosity Might Be the Best Business Move You Make
How Curiosity Can Lead to Unexpected Business Success
Her journey serves as a remarkable testament to how following your curiosity and leveraging your unique strengths can lead to a fulfilling and successful business.
As it turns out, neither Brittany nor I could remember exactly how we first got connected, but we have quite a few delightful people in common. One of the things I find most captivating about Brittany is how much she embraces her curiosity as a business asset. We often hear that the way to succeed is to niche down, focus, choose a lane, and stick with it. This makes us easier to find and refer to. However, as I’ve watched Brittany's business develop over the years, I noticed how she was following her curiosity, letting it guide her to create a business uniquely suited to her.
Brittany confirmed this in our recent conversation, recorded for the ADHD-ish podcast, acknowledging that it took her a while to fully lean into this approach, but embracing this mindset has brought her limitless rewards and wonderful experiences. But before delving into how curiosity has shaped her current business, we had to go back to her roots. This isn't her first venture, and there’s a family history of entrepreneurship playing a significant role in her journey.
Her grandfather on her mother’s side owned a barbershop in a small town in Indiana. Her father's journey was also marked by the volatility of being an entrepreneur. He was involved in sales and had his own ventures but faced significant challenges and instability. For someone like Brittany, this exposure made entrepreneurship seem risky and unstable, which made her crave predictability and security. Ironically, she ended up becoming an entrepreneur herself, a path influenced significantly by a client from her early massage therapy career.
This particular client, a retired businessman, kept encouraging her to open her own practice. Initially hesitant and uncertain, Brittany decided to take a leap when she found an available space in a yoga studio. This small step in 2015 marked the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey. She never planned to manage other therapists, content with running her own solo practice. Yet, this was only the beginning.
As we continued our discussion, I asked Brittany what she thought this client saw in her that made him believe she was meant to be her own boss. Her response was grounded in her intrinsic desire to care for others, in her own unique way. She believed he noticed her attention to detail and the care she provided, which stood out to him. This quality, combined with her ability to connect with clients on a personal level, likely convinced him to nudge her toward entrepreneurship. And, I am glad she decided to listen, as I have been a client of Brittany’s myself.
Brittany's story highlights an interesting observation: often, others see our entrepreneurial traits before we see them ourselves. For me, in my previous mental health career, people often asked if I had a private practice, assuming I wasn't only working in publicly funded healthcare. What they were picking up on was my intrinsic inclination to not only go above and beyond but to do things my way – a hallmark of entrepreneurial spirit. This realization came to shape my own journey, much like it did for Brittany.
During the pandemic, with her massage practice on hold, Brittany missed her clients but found herself immersed in the world of online webinars and workshops. She discovered the importance of social proof – testimonials that she realized were missing from her website. This led her to revamp her site, and during this process, she discovered her knack for copywriting. Encouraged by positive feedback, she began pitching her copywriting services, initially on the side, before fully embracing it.
When Brittany and her boyfriend decided to relocate to New England, she faced another turning point. Setting up a new massage practice didn't pan out, and she found herself making little to no money. In a moment of distress, she realized she needed to lean into the copywriting business she had been nurturing. Clubhouse, the social audio app, introduced her to SEO, and she saw the powerful synergy between SEO and copywriting. Again, her curiosity led her to merge these fields in her own unique way.
Brittany’s transition showcases the essence of following curiosity. From a massage therapist to an SEO copywriter and strategist, her journey is filled with instances of her curiosity leading to valuable discoveries. She explained how, like in her massage practice where she combined different techniques, she couldn't separate SEO from copywriting once she saw their interdependence.
Throughout our conversation, the theme of using storytelling emerged as a powerful tool. While Brittany initially did not feel like a good storyteller, she worked hard to improve. Her storytelling skills developed naturally from her desire to take care of people and make them feel less alone. This foundational need to connect through stories became a significant part of her copywriting work, particularly in creating case studies that marry storytelling with SEO and social proof.
Brittany’s methodology shows a practical way female entrepreneurs can harness their curiosity to build businesses that are resilient and adaptable. At the heart of her strategy is SEO – a field often seen as daunting but essential for long-term business success. Brittany demystifies SEO by making it approachable, fun, and simple. She highlights how a focus on SEO can be a significant differentiator for entrepreneurs, ensuring that our digital presence works effectively, even when social media channels might fail us.
Brittany’s approach to SEO isn’t just technical; it’s strategic and grounded on empathy. It’s about understanding who you’re serving and how best to reach them. This involves using social proof and storytelling to connect on a deeper level with potential clients. For female entrepreneurs like myself, integrating these elements can lead to more meaningful engagement and sustained business growth.
In 2025, Brittany plans to focus more on expanding her SEO expertise to help other entrepreneurs optimize not just their websites, but their entire digital ecosystem, including blogs and podcasts. This holistic approach to SEO reflects her belief that every bit of optimization counts, making our existing content work harder for us.
Her journey serves as a remarkable testament to how following your curiosity and leveraging your unique strengths can lead to a fulfilling and successful business. For all the female entrepreneurs out there, Brittany’s story is a powerful reminder that our paths don’t have to be linear or conventional. By embracing curiosity, we can discover opportunities that align with our passions and create businesses that are uniquely ours.
